Theory Night: Feb. 9th, sincerity and art?

Hi everyone,

In response to our last meeting, people wanted to explore the idea of a “new sincerity” in art. Enclosed is a mix of reading suggested by Lori and Agustina and something else I found. I anticipate our next discussion will use these texts as a springboard for a larger conversation, so please feel free to bring anything you think might be related to share with the group. I am not really sure what “new sincerity” really means.

Here we go:

After this we will dive into the more anthropological stuff other people wanted to read.

See you Tuesday, Feb. 9th at 7pm at BFI (located 180 NE 39th Street, suite 210, Miami, FL 33137). Please feel free to bring drinks and snacks!

  1. Also, Miranda July is oft credited with being a forbear of “new sincerity”. But it’s early enough that we can take or leave that, right? I suggest we also look into Khaela Maricich, aka The Blow, because music is art too (outside of Miami).

  2. Curious … (found via Google)

Adam Kelly has an essay called ‘David Foster Wallace and the New Sincerity in American Fiction’, to be published this year (2010) in, ‘Consider David Foster Wallace’ (edited by David Hering and published by the SideShow Media Group).

That somehow loops in the previous reading to these new ones.

  3. Not sure I’m going to make it d/t prior commitments but the Morris essay drove me crazy enough that I crafted 14 brief notes on it. I’ll email it to you Ruba and you can post it, burn it, ignore it, etc.
